Edward L. Batanian
1927--2007
The memory of Ed Batanian lives on even though the
Ashtabula--Northeast Ohio sports icon passed away on June 19, 2007, following a
battle with cancer. In addition to serving as the Athletic Director at Ashtabula
Edgewood High School for many years, Ed had served as secretary of the Northeastern
Conference, was formerly a member of the Northeast District Athletic Board and OHSAA
Board of Control and at the
time of his passing had served as the secretary of the Northeast Board since August of 1984.
Ed was a Cambridge, Ohio native but spent most of his life in Ashtabula after coming
from Sharon, Pennslyvania. A graduate of Youngstown State University, he served in the
US Navy during World War II. He and his wife Rosalie raised seven children.
Ed spent his life serving kids, teaching, coaching and
administering interscholastic programs for students, student-athletes, parents and the
community. As tributes poured in following his passing there were a couple of traits
those who knew him will always remember--one was his genuine kindness and compasasion
for others, always willing to help others. Further, his seemingly tireless
energy inspired those around him to recognize and appreciate the importance of commitment
to faith, family and hard work if you chose to serve in a leadership role.
Ed Batanian's influence on interscholastic athletics could
be felt everywhere. As a board member of the Ohio High School Athletic Association
Northeast District Board and Board of Control,he helped shape policies that affected
young student athletes all over Ohio.
The Northeast Board has discussed the feasibility/possibility
of establishing an Edward Batanian Scholarhip in his Memory. The scholarship would be
awarded annually to a worthy student-athlete in the Northeast District.
Contruibutions can be made to board treasurer Al Lopez.
